Europe's AI Ambition Hits a Data Wall

The paradox of Europe’s digital transformation lies in a widening gap between ambition and execution. According to the 2026 Digital Maturity Index, which surveyed 3,000 IT decision-makers, overall digital maturity scores rose to 69/100, yet the foundational infrastructure required to sustain these gains is crumbling. Content services, the bedrock for reliable AI, dropped to 56/100, marking the only category to decline in the study.

This structural failure is stalling progress. Currently, 57% of organizations report that their innovation pilots fail to reach full production, largely because information is too scattered or messy for AI to process reliably. John Newton, chief innovation strategist at Hyland, warns that pouring capital into AI while ignoring information architecture creates a false sense of progress. Without unified, governed data, enterprises are building advanced systems on foundations that cannot support them, turning potential competitive advantages into costly technical debt.
