Waitrose scales digital shelf technology across 200 locations

More than 200 Waitrose stores have now transitioned to electronic shelf labels, marking a significant expansion of the grocery retailer’s partnership with SOLUM. Since December 2025, the chain has replaced traditional paper tags with Newton Pro digital displays to automate pricing updates and product information management across its entire estate.

The deployment targets a modernization of in-store operations, allowing staff to update pricing centrally across fresh, ambient, and specialist departments. Waitrose selected the Newton Pro hardware specifically for its reliability and aesthetic fit within its premium retail environment, ensuring that digital updates do not compromise the store’s visual presentation.

Mark Duckworth, Country Manager for SOLUM UK & Ireland, noted that the milestone signals a broader shift in how retailers view connected infrastructure. The technology aims to improve operational efficiency and streamline the experience for both employees and shoppers. This rollout remains a central component of the retailer’s ongoing capital investment in digital infrastructure to maintain competitive agility in a rapidly changing market.
