Taxpayers Protection Alliance Criticizes EU Digital Markets Act Orders

The European Commission has issued binding orders under the Digital Markets Act, forcing Google to open its Android and Search platforms to competitors. The move mandates that third-party AI assistants gain equal access to Android features and requires Google to share proprietary search data with rival firms and AI-driven engines.

David B. McGarry, Research Director at the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, condemned the decision as a penalty for success rather than a genuine effort to foster competition. He argued that forcing Google to surrender intellectual property and sensitive trade secrets risks compromising user privacy. The mandate requires sharing search data that consumers originally entrusted to Google under the expectation of confidentiality.

Beyond privacy concerns, McGarry warned of significant national security implications. He cautioned that the forced data sharing could potentially reach companies influenced by geopolitical rivals, including China. By pressuring American technology firms to weaken their own platforms, the European Commission is creating a volatile regulatory environment. The alliance is now calling on the Trump administration to exert diplomatic pressure to defend American commercial interests and protect the data of citizens and military personnel residing in Europe.
