Retail Tech Weekly: Uber's $14.8 Billion Acquisition and AI Expansion

A massive $14.8 billion deal between Uber and Delivery Hero dominated the retail landscape this week, signaling a major consolidation in the global food delivery sector. Beyond the headlines of high-stakes acquisitions, retailers are increasingly deploying physical AI and robotics to automate store operations and enhance customer experiences.

Uber's planned acquisition of Delivery Hero marks a strategic push to expand its reach across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. While the deal promises to double the company's delivery and mobility footprint, it faces potential scrutiny from antitrust regulators due to market overlaps. To mitigate this, Delivery Hero has already struck a side deal to offload business in 14 markets to SSW Partners for $1.6 billion.

Elsewhere, technology integration is accelerating. Tesco has begun trialing Simbe’s Tally robot for stock scanning, following similar efforts by Morrisons. In the beauty sector, shu uemura launched an AI-powered mirror in Tokyo that uses 3D facial scanning to provide personalized makeup recommendations. Meanwhile, Decathlon solidified its partnership with Vusion, reaching 700 stores equipped with electronic shelf labels, and Augmodo secured $21 million to scale its physical AI assistants for retail and manufacturing workforces. Investment remains robust, exemplified by the food tech platform Wonder, which recently closed a $650 million Series D round at a $9 billion valuation.
