Gap Inc. finds AI success depends on mindset, not just mandates

When Gap Inc. invited 388 employees to participate in a joint research study with Microsoft, the results challenged standard corporate adoption strategies. Instead of rigid workflows, the company discovered that positioning AI as a collaborative thought partner significantly outperformed top-down mandates, while also avoiding a phenomenon researchers dubbed the AI hangover.

Sven Gerjets, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at Gap Inc., noted that teams allowed to integrate AI on their own terms produced higher quality results than those subjected to forced processes. When staff viewed the technology as a creative partner rather than a mere tool, they delivered more effective work. Conversely, rigid implementation led to frustration, which carried over into subsequent tasks and diminished overall sentiment toward AI integration.

Beyond internal research, the retailer is expanding its AI footprint across its supply chain through a partnership with Inspectorio. By utilizing the platform, brands including Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta aim to improve product traceability and automate task execution. Inspectorio CEO Chirag Patel stated that this deployment is designed to turn supply chain transparency into a competitive advantage, enabling faster decision-making across the company's global network.
