Retirement Savers Demand Simplified Plans and Guaranteed Income

A striking 73% of retirement plan participants now crave an "easy button" for their financial decision-making, while 91% seek in-plan guaranteed income options. The 2026 J.P. Morgan Asset Management survey reveals a widening gap between employee expectations for employer-led guidance and the actual complexity of modern retirement planning.

The data underscores a generational divide in responsibility, with 86% of Gen Z respondents looking to their employers for help, compared to only 61% of Boomers. Alyson Frost, Head of Retirement Insights at J.P. Morgan, noted that many workers lack confidence in their ability to navigate these choices alone, fueling a desire for automated support and simplified pathways to convert savings into steady income.

Beyond the demand for simplicity, the survey highlights a disconnect regarding the transition into retirement. While 44% of participants hope to retire gradually by reducing hours, only 12% of actual retirees achieved that experience. Financial insecurity remains a persistent hurdle: 53% of active participants do not know their specific savings target, and 59% admit they should be contributing more. Meghan Conklin, Vice President of Retirement Insights, emphasized that these findings signal a critical opportunity for firms to enhance plan design, particularly through automated enrollment and contribution escalation, which boast satisfaction rates of 96% and 97% respectively.
