The shift away from traditional search has hit publishers hard. According to the 2026 Reuters Institute Digital News Report, only 4% of AI chatbot users click through to original news sources, a stark drop compared to the 19% referral rate from standard search engines. Arc XP aims to reverse this trend by embedding an answer layer directly onto publisher properties, allowing readers to ask follow-up questions without leaving the site.
Joey Marburger, Vice President of Content Intelligence at Arc XP, described the tool as a way to reclaim the moment of reader curiosity. Unlike generic AI, the system restricts its output to the publisher’s own reporting and includes guardrails to prevent hallucinations. If a news outlet lacks sufficient source material, the product declines to answer, maintaining editorial integrity.
Beyond keeping users engaged, the platform introduces new monetization mechanics. Publishers can use a subscription gateway to meter answers rather than articles, creating a high-intent conversion point. Additionally, the tool utilizes IAB Topic Intelligence to classify reader questions in real time, allowing for contextual advertising that keeps audience data within the publisher’s own ecosystem. The platform is currently available to Arc XP partners, with a standalone JavaScript version offered for other media organizations.
