Sempra Infrastructure Loads First LNG Cargo at Mexico’s Pacific Terminal

Sempra Infrastructure has completed its first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the ECA LNG Phase 1 facility in Ensenada, Mexico. This milestone marks the start of operations for the first liquefaction terminal on the Pacific Coast, establishing a direct link for North American gas to reach Asian markets.

The project, a joint venture involving TotalEnergies and Mitsui & Co., utilizes a single liquefaction train with a capacity of 3.25 million tonnes per annum. By leveraging its strategic location in Baja California, the facility offers a shortened shipping route to Pacific Basin buyers, bypassing the transit constraints associated with traditional Gulf Coast exports. Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, noted that the facility provides a reliable source of energy during a period of global trade volatility.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné highlighted that the terminal enhances the company's regional portfolio by securing privileged access to Asian demand. While the facility is currently finalizing its ramp-up, it is expected to reach substantial completion by the summer of 2026. Following this, long-term sale and purchase agreements will transition into full commercial operations. Sempra is already looking toward expansion, with a second phase of the project currently under active development at the Ensenada site.
