Amazon and Alphabet Workers Protest Project Nimbus Contract

Chanting #NoTechForApartheid, a coalition of Amazon and Google employees gathered outside the annual Amazon Web Services Summit on Wednesday to demand the cancellation of a billion-dollar cloud computing contract with the Israeli government, arguing that the technology facilitates the surveillance and displacement of Palestinians.

The demonstrators, joined by activists from groups including Jewish Voice for Peace and the Adalah Justice Project, targeted Project Nimbus, a joint initiative providing cloud infrastructure to the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Land Authority. Protesters contend that the project enables discriminatory land policies and systemic violence, marking the latest escalation in a long-standing internal campaign against the tech giants' involvement.

Software engineer Alestin Sphere, speaking at the event, stated that workers refuse to let their labor contribute to the weaponization of AI or the expansion of cyber warfare. Laith Abad, another participating engineer, drew parallels between the impact of the contract and his own family’s history of displacement, urging leadership to prioritize ethical standards over corporate profit. The protest coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, further highlighting the deep-seated grievances of the workforce regarding the intersection of Big Tech and military occupation.
