Private Fire Departments Emerge as Essential Resort Infrastructure

Following a deadly blaze at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort that claimed one life and displaced 1,700 guests, the Caribbean tourism sector is facing a reckoning over fire safety. While municipal emergency services often struggle with distance and congestion, some operators are turning to private, on-site fire protection models.

Meliá Punta Cana Beach Resort has pioneered a proactive approach by partnering with Huntsville-based Rural Metro Fire. By installing a dedicated fire department directly on the property, the resort mitigates risks posed by high-density construction, coastal winds, and highly flammable materials like thatch roofing. This 24-hour, on-site presence ensures that emergency response protocols are tailored to the specific layout of the hotel rather than relying on distant municipal stations.

Rural Metro Fire president John Hannon emphasizes that in large-scale hospitality environments, seconds determine the outcome of an ignition. The model provides specialized apparatus and trained personnel who are familiar with the resort’s unique vulnerabilities. As the Dominican Republic continues to host millions of visitors annually, international operators are increasingly viewing this private service as a core component of risk management, aiming to bridge the critical gap between traditional public infrastructure and the realities of modern Caribbean resort development.
