The system streamlines the purchase of items like alcohol, tobacco, and medication by leveraging a shopper’s own smartphone. When a restricted product is scanned at a kiosk, a QR code appears, directing the user to a browser-based verification page. The device then utilizes on-device vision AI to perform a facial age estimate. If the estimate meets the retailer’s specific threshold, the transaction proceeds automatically.
Should the initial estimate fall short, the process prompts the customer to scan a physical ID. The software compares the document against a live selfie to verify authenticity and prevent the use of fraudulent credentials. By shifting the verification process to the customer's device, Scandit aims to remove the financial burden of purchasing proprietary hardware or maintaining high labor costs for manual oversight. This rollout represents the company’s first foray into biometric technology, moving beyond its traditional data capture roots to address the specific friction points of modern retail environments.
