Trump Targets Eight NATO Allies With Tariffs Over Greenland Standoff

Thousands of protesters took to the streets across Denmark and Greenland this weekend to reject Donald Trump’s plan to purchase the territory, chanting that the island is not for sale. Hours later, the president responded by threatening eight European nations with escalating tariffs until his annexation demands are met.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will face a 10% tariff starting February 1, rising to 25% by June. The president characterized these measures as leverage to force a deal for the total acquisition of Greenland, dismissing the widespread opposition from the island’s 57,000 residents, 85% of whom oppose joining the United States.

European leaders condemned the move as an act of intimidation, with French President Emmanuel Macron comparing the rhetoric to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, a growing chorus of U.S. lawmakers, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Chris Coons, warned that the policy threatens to dismantle the NATO alliance. Critics argue the president lacks the legal authority to impose such levies, and the ultimate fate of the tariffs now rests with the Supreme Court, which is expected to address the legality of his broader trade agenda next week.
