Migros Launches Autonomous Sunday Service in Geneva

Starting July 2, a Migros grocery store in Geneva’s Cité-Vieusseux district will shift into a fully autonomous mode on Sundays and public holidays. The 300-square-meter location, which operates with traditional staffing during the week, aims to accommodate urban demand for flexible shopping hours through a sensor-monitored, cashier-free environment.

Customers will access the store using a Cumulus card or a standard debit or credit card, gaining entry to the full inventory of 5,000 products. Once inside, shoppers process their purchases at existing self-checkout kiosks while a network of surveillance cameras and sensors monitors the space to ensure security. This hybrid model represents a strategic pivot for Migros Geneva, designed to mirror the convenience found in high-traffic transit hubs.

Grégory Décaillet, Managing Director of Migros Geneva, noted that the initiative serves as a pilot program to gauge customer response to automated services. While the retailer views this as a significant milestone, the company plans to evaluate feedback from the Cité-Vieusseux location before deciding whether to deploy the autonomous format to other points of sale across the region.
