In a recent Fox News interview, Collins argued that the landmark abortion ruling would have been overturned regardless of Kavanaugh’s presence on the bench. Her Democratic challenger, Graham Platner, quickly fired back, accusing the incumbent of "lying through her teeth" to deflect from her role in confirming a justice who ultimately dismantled the constitutional right to abortion. Platner emphasized that Collins was the deciding vote in Kavanaugh’s 2018 confirmation, despite her previous insistence that he would respect established precedents.
The fallout intensified as the Planned Parenthood Action Fund officially endorsed Platner’s bid to unseat Collins. Alexis McGill Johnson, president of the organization, stated that Maine voters deserve a senator they can trust, arguing that Collins has failed to protect reproductive healthcare. This political pressure arrives alongside new data from the National Partnership for Women & Families, which reports that over 47 million women of reproductive age now reside in states where abortion access has been severely curtailed or eliminated since the Dobbs v. Jackson decision.
