Parcel thefts spike as Amazon Prime Day coincides with World Cup

As shoppers flock to Amazon Prime Day sales for World Cup gear, new analysis reveals a dangerous trend: porch piracy is surging. Data from Quadient indicates that parcel thefts jumped 92% this June, leaving high-value electronics and tournament merchandise vulnerable to opportunistic thieves while homeowners are away at work.

The scale of the issue is significant, with total losses from stolen deliveries reaching £666.5 million across the UK. On average, each stolen parcel represents a loss of £138. The research highlights that 60% of these incidents occur during standard working hours between 9am and 5pm, a window when deliveries are frequently left unattended on doorsteps. Beyond the financial impact, 37% of victims report experiencing genuine anxiety following the theft of their property.

Katia Bourgeais-Crémel, Director of Lockers Automation Europe at Quadient, suggests that the convergence of the 2026 World Cup and aggressive discounting makes this period particularly high-risk. High-demand items such as home entertainment technology and team apparel are prime targets for criminals. Consumers are being urged to reconsider standard home delivery options for expensive items to avoid leaving packages exposed during the summer months.
