Judge Patrick Schiltz of the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota issued a scathing ruling, labeling the DOJ’s actions a blatantly unlawful abuse of power. Appointed by former President George W. Bush, Schiltz found overwhelming evidence that the subpoenas were not intended to investigate criminal activity, but rather to punish officials who refused to align with federal enforcement priorities. The judge dismissed the DOJ’s justification as risible, noting that the refusal of local leaders to divert resources for federal immigration tasks constitutes constitutionally protected conduct.
Schiltz pointed to public threats of retribution from Donald Trump and internal DOJ communications as clear indicators of an improper motive. Following the decision, Governor Walz framed the ruling as a crucial victory for the rule of law, while Mayor Jacob Frey accused the federal government of weaponizing the justice system against those who advocate for their constituents. Representative Angie Craig and other observers echoed these sentiments, characterizing the failed legal maneuver as a baseless political attack that ultimately floundered in court.
