Keir Starmer Resigns Amid Mounting Labour Party Turmoil

With the Labour Party facing a surge in support for the far-right Reform party, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday. He departs after less than two years in office, acknowledging that his own party no longer views him as the leader capable of securing their future.

Starmer framed his exit by claiming he leaves behind a stronger, fairer Britain, better equipped for upcoming challenges. This assessment met immediate, fierce rejection from progressive critics, who argue his tenure served only to normalize the far right. Detractors point to the government's steadfast support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, the crackdown on groups like Palestine Action, and a pivot toward restrictive anti-immigration rhetoric as evidence of a failed, hollow agenda.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn led the condemnation, describing Starmer’s legacy as one of moral and political bankruptcy. Corbyn argued that the prime minister squandered a massive parliamentary majority while failing to address child poverty or widening inequality. Others joined the chorus of criticism: Zarah Sultana, MP for the Your party, remarked that Starmer showed more emotion regarding his personal job loss than for the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Meanwhile, economist Yanis Varoufakis characterized the outgoing leader as a man of "ethical decrepitude" who discarded his campaign promises immediately upon taking power. For many on the left, the resignation is not seen as a conclusion to their grievances, but as the end of a premiership defined by the abandonment of principle for power.
