Colombia Braces for Unrest as De la Espriella Claims Disputed Victory

Roaring motorbike engines and chants of resistance filled the streets of Bogotá late Sunday after Abelardo de la Espriella claimed victory in Colombia’s presidential runoff. With 99% of votes counted, the far-right millionaire holds a narrow lead of less than one percentage point, triggering immediate challenges from his political opponents.

Outgoing President Gustavo Petro and leftist Senator Iván Cepeda have rejected the premature declaration, labeling the results unofficial while the formal scrutiny process remains active. Petro took to social media to condemn the announcement as an abuse of power, warning that the media-led coronation ignores the ongoing verification of ballots. Preliminary figures place De la Espriella at 49.66% against Cepeda’s 48.7%, a margin thin enough to guarantee further legal and civil friction.

The race has been defined by overt external pressure. US President Donald Trump publicly celebrated the result on Truth Social, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio quickly signaled an intent to collaborate with the incoming administration on security and migration. This intervention follows weeks of warnings from Democratic lawmakers regarding the Trump administration’s heavy-handed influence, which critics argue violated national sovereignty. De la Espriella, a media personality known for his luxury lifestyle and a fashion brand featuring $1,000 sneakers, has vowed to dismantle Petro’s social policies, which are credited with reducing poverty and raising the national minimum wage. As thousands of protesters gather in the capital, the path to a peaceful transition appears increasingly volatile.
