The new research phase centers on two distinct clinical programs: DAREON and Beamion. Under the DAREON program, the company has launched two trials, DAREON-Lung-1 and DAREON-NEC-1, to evaluate obrixtamig, a bispecific T-cell engager. This therapy targets the DLL3 biomarker, which is highly expressed on tumor cells in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and extrapulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma (epNEC) but absent in healthy tissue. By focusing on this specific biological marker, researchers hope to redefine standard care for these high-mortality, aggressive diseases.
Simultaneously, the Beamion LUNG-3 trial shifts focus to early-stage intervention. This study investigates HERNEXEOS, an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor, as an adjuvant monotherapy for patients with HER2-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) following surgical resection. According to Lykke Hinsch Gylvin, Chief Medical Officer at Boehringer Ingelheim, the company is prioritizing targeted therapies earlier in the disease trajectory to address the significant risk of recurrence. These trials represent a broader strategic push to combine targeted molecular approaches with immune-system modulation to treat cancers with high unmet medical needs.
