The blaze at the South Los Palos Street facility has forced residents into prolonged shelter-in-place orders due to hazardous particle pollution. Officials are grappling with the environmental fallout of 85 million pounds of thawing frozen food, a situation that has prompted both Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom to issue emergency proclamations to accelerate public health resources. Beyond the immediate smoke and air quality dangers, many families face lost wages and disrupted access to basic necessities.
To address these gaps, the CCF Impact Fund is distributing Angeleno Cards for direct cash assistance, alongside food, air purifiers, and essential supplies like masks and water. Miguel A. Santana, president and CEO of the California Community Foundation, emphasized that the strategy relies on existing neighborhood partners to ensure aid reaches those most in need with speed and dignity. Contributions are currently being accepted through the foundation's website to sustain both immediate relief efforts and the eventual transition into long-term community recovery.
