Iranian Negotiators Walk Out of Peace Talks After Trump Threats

Peace negotiations in Switzerland stalled abruptly Sunday after Donald Trump threatened a full-scale invasion of Iran and the assassination of its diplomats. The outburst, triggered by Tehran’s decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, prompted the Iranian delegation to storm out of the summit, demanding a formal apology.

The collapse of the session followed a volatile tirade in which the US president declared Iran would lose its status as a sovereign nation if it restricted access to the critical waterway. According to reports, the Iranian team filed a formal complaint with Pakistani and Qatari mediators before abandoning the mountain resort where the talks were hosted. Chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed the rhetoric as empty posturing, insisting his forces are prepared for a different form of engagement.

While the primary delegation has departed, back-channel discussions through intermediaries persist. The Iranian side maintains it will not return to the table until Trump retracts his comments and Israel completes a total withdrawal from Lebanon. Meanwhile, Israeli officials have signaled only potential, limited pullbacks in specific buffer zones, complicating an already fragile diplomatic landscape. Analysts note that the White House’s erratic messaging—alternating between recognizing Iran's nuclear energy rights and threatening total destruction—continues to undermine the possibility of a lasting ceasefire.
