Bates eventually agreed to play the role of Helen “Mama” Boucher, the overprotective mother to Sandler’s character, Bobby. The decision sparked a lasting creative partnership and a genuine off-screen friendship. Reflecting on the production, Bates noted that she had the time of her life on set, describing Sandler as a genius. The film went on to earn $185 million worldwide on a $23 million budget, a massive commercial success that surprised even its leads.
Sandler, who recently recounted the story at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, admitted he knew about the discarded script from the beginning. Despite the initial friction, the two grew close, with Bates even offering Sandler support when critics targeted his work. Their bond has persisted long after the 1998 release; when Sandler was snubbed by the Academy for his role in Uncut Gems in 2020, Bates publicly championed him, calling him the "GOAT" and insisting he was robbed of a nomination.
