US Public Support for Israel Hits Historic Lows

A sharp erosion of sentiment toward Israel is sweeping across the American electorate, with recent polling data revealing a double-digit decline in favorability since 2023. The shift is most pronounced among Democrats and independent voters, signaling a fundamental realignment in how the public views the nation's long-standing ally.

A survey conducted by Hart Research Associates and Public Opinion Strategies for NBC News highlights a stark national pivot. Only 32% of registered voters now view Israel in a positive light, a significant fall from the 47% recorded three years ago. Conversely, negative perceptions have climbed to 39%, up from 24% in 2023. This trend is driven by a massive collapse in support among Democrats, where positive sentiment plummeted from 34% in 2024 to just 13% today.

Independent voters mirror this dissatisfaction, with positive views nearly halving to 21% while negative ratings surged to 48%. Even within the Republican base, where support remains strongest, favorability has dipped by nine percentage points. Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt attributes this widespread disenchantment to the ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in at least 70,000 Palestinian civilian deaths. As the political landscape shifts, even candidates traditionally aligned with Israel are actively distancing themselves from the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, which has become a lightning rod for criticism within primary contests.
