UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Killed in Targeted Manhattan Attack

A gunman lay in wait for minutes before executing a targeted strike against UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a midtown Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning. Police report the assailant ignored other pedestrians, tracked his target, and fled the scene on an e-bike, triggering an urgent citywide manhunt.

New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed the killing was not a random act of violence. The 50-year-old executive was approaching the New York Hilton Hotel for an annual investor conference when the shooter emerged from behind and opened fire. Thompson was rushed to Mount Sinai West hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are currently reviewing footage and tracking the suspect, who was last seen escaping into Central Park. Thompson, a Minnesota resident and 20-year veteran of UnitedHealth Group, had served as CEO since April 2021. Law enforcement officials describe the suspect as a male who demonstrated significant preparation, specifically selecting Thompson from the crowd before striking.
