The Appia Foundation operates under the Joint Development Foundation to create modular, open-source specifications that act as a connecting layer for AI safety. By translating abstract frameworks like ISO/IEC guidelines into tangible evaluation criteria, the project seeks to move AI governance from theoretical principles to measurable outcomes. The framework allows organizations to assess specific components rather than entire systems, enabling the pass-through of technical evidence to downstream users.
This architecture is designed to reduce the friction of vendor evaluations and contractual compliance. By establishing a vendor-neutral environment, the coalition intends to lower operational costs and provide a consistent basis for auditing AI systems. Initial members include Arm, Ericsson, Mastercard, Mitsubishi Electric, and Siemens, who collectively aim to build an industry-wide infrastructure for accountability in AI deployment.
