House Democrats Demand Answers on AI Role in Deadly Iranian School Strike

More than 120 House Democrats are demanding that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth disclose whether artificial intelligence played a role in the recent bombing of a girls' school in Minab, Iran. The strike, which killed at least 175 people, has triggered urgent questions regarding military targeting protocols and human oversight.

The lawmakers, led by Rep. Sara Jacobs, issued a formal letter questioning the use of the Maven Smart System and other AI tools during Operation Epic Fury. Their inquiry follows reports from The New York Times that Pentagon investigators determined the strike was a targeting error, erroneously identifying the Shajareh Tayyebeh school as part of an adjacent military base.

Concerns regarding AI-driven warfare have intensified as the Pentagon increasingly integrates software from firms like Palantir into combat operations. While U.S. Central Command head Brad Cooper maintains that advanced tools allow for faster decision-making, critics argue that the push for "maximum lethality" under Secretary Hegseth has eroded critical safeguards. The signatories emphasized that civilian infrastructure must remain protected, describing the mounting toll of non-combatant deaths as an alarming consequence of the current administration's approach to military engagement.
