MiniMed Launches Smallest App-Controlled Insulin Pump in U.S.

Patients with type 1 or insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes now have access to the MiniMed Flex, the company’s most compact insulin pump to date. The device, which integrates directly with smartphone controls, marks a shift toward balancing clinical performance with the daily lifestyle needs of those managing the condition.

The system features the Simplera Sync sensor, a disposable, all-in-one unit designed for simple two-step insertion. Despite being roughly half the size of previous MiniMed models, the pump maintains a 300-unit insulin capacity. It runs on the company’s SmartGuard algorithm, which includes Meal Detection technology to automatically adjust insulin delivery every five minutes based on real-time glucose readings.

According to MiniMed CEO Que Dallara, the focus was to create a device small enough to remain discreet while handling the complex calculations of glucose management. Clinical data indicates the system helps users maintain an 80% Time in Range (TIR). When paired with the Extended infusion set, users can extend wear time to seven days, significantly reducing the number of required injections compared to traditional therapies.

Dr. Anders Carlson of the International Diabetes Center noted that the shift toward app-based control addresses a primary friction point for many patients: the need to manage multiple devices. The FDA has cleared the system for use by individuals with type 1 diabetes aged 7 and older, and adults with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes. While the current launch utilizes the Simplera Sync sensor, MiniMed plans to expand compatibility with Abbott’s Instinct sensor later this summer.
