The Mims Gallery will house "Beyond the Wall," a collection of 43 original pieces created by the Nash Correctional Institution Art Club. This program, which is the only one of its kind in North Carolina, provides inmates with five weekly art classes. The display runs through July 30, and attendees can participate in a silent auction for the works, with all proceeds benefiting the Your Choice Resource Center in Rocky Mount. According to Art Club Coordinator Markell Mitchell, the program remains a unique fixture in the state’s correctional system.
Simultaneously, the Janice Gravely Gallery will feature the Tar River Art Gallery Summer Show, displaying 150 new works from over 40 local artists. This collection encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including oil painting, sculpture, photography, and metalwork. The exhibition will remain open to the public through September. The June 28 reception, sponsored by R F Timberlake & Company, Inc., will feature refreshments and live music by cellist Jeff Hatley. Admission and parking are free for all visitors.
