JBD Unveils Roadrunner II to Advance Full-Color AR Performance

JBD has launched the Roadrunner II, a polychrome MicroLED projector designed to push the boundaries of consumer-grade augmented reality. Built on the company’s 2.5 μm pixel-pitch platform, the ultra-compact unit aims to provide high-resolution, full-color visuals while maintaining the power efficiency required for next-generation AI-integrated smart glasses.

The Roadrunner II features a 0.1-inch MicroLED panel with a pixel density of 10,160 PPI, delivering an 800 x 600 resolution. This represents a 56% increase in pixel count over previous standards, coupled with a 480 Hz refresh rate to ensure smoothness in fast-motion scenarios. Despite its small 0.18 cc footprint, the projector achieves an in-eye brightness of 6,000 nits when paired with a 30-degree field-of-view waveguide, all while maintaining a typical power draw of just 98 mW.

Beyond the hardware, JBD is introducing a monocular development kit to help manufacturers integrate these displays into lightweight eyewear. According to CEO Dr. Li Qiming, the project targets a balance between visual fidelity, system power, and aesthetic form factor. By enabling full-color capabilities in a compact module, the company intends to transition AR displays from specialized prototypes into practical, everyday tools for AI-driven interaction.
