Coalition of 325 Groups Demands Medicare for All to Combat Economic Strain

As Americans grapple with the rising costs of housing, fuel, and medical care under the current administration, a coalition of over 325 advocacy organizations is calling for a federal Medicare for All system, arguing that the nation’s healthcare sector must be fundamentally restructured to prioritize people over corporate profits.

The coalition’s open letter warns that the status quo is failing the working class, pointing to KFF data showing that 40% of Americans are burdened by medical debt. The group contends that the absence of bold, transformational policies has created a vacuum that allows far-right political movements to exploit public anger. By framing healthcare as a human right, the signatories aim to shift the national agenda toward structural reform rather than the incremental measures they argue only serve to protect industry interests.

While federal legislation for Medicare for All has been repeatedly introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell, it remains stalled in a Congress controlled by the GOP. The coalition views 2029 as a potential window for legislative action, provided the 2028 election cycle results in a shift in political leadership. Public Citizen healthcare policy advocate Eagan Kemp echoed these sentiments, labeling the current for-profit healthcare model a failure that gorges on public suffering while leaving millions with inadequate care and mounting financial instability. The coalition includes groups such as National Nurses United, the Sunrise Movement, and the Democratic Socialists of America, all of which are urging lawmakers to abandon political consultants in favor of addressing the immediate needs of the electorate.
