Innovative Molecules Targets Epstein-Barr Virus with New Drug Program

Munich-based Innovative Molecules is expanding its clinical-stage virology pipeline by launching a program centered on Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) treatments. The company plans to transition its series of targeted polymerase inhibitors into Phase 1 human trials by 2027, aiming to address critical gaps in current antiviral care.

The new initiative targets a virus linked to complex health issues, including autoimmune conditions, transplant-related complications, and various lymphoproliferative disorders. Despite the prevalence of these conditions, effective targeted therapies remain scarce, positioning the company’s portfolio to address significant unmet medical needs. CEO Florian Vogel noted that the program aligns with the firm's broader commitment to developing differentiated therapeutics for severe viral diseases, reflecting a growing scientific momentum in the EBV space.

This expansion complements the company’s ongoing work with adibelivir, a helicase-primase inhibitor currently under development for Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. By leveraging its expertise in herpesvirus-mediated diseases, the firm seeks to solidify its position in the biotechnology sector through specialized antiviral assets. The upcoming 2027 clinical milestone for the EBV program marks a strategic shift toward broader viral intervention, building upon the company's existing research framework.
