Seven Security Suites Lead Latest Real-World Protection Benchmarks

Malware is increasingly infiltrating trusted platforms rather than just shady corners of the web, according to the latest Real-World Protection Test from AV-Comparatives. The Innsbruck-based organization evaluated 20 consumer security products from February to May 2026, highlighting a shift in how attackers exploit professional and hobbyist marketplaces.

The recent findings underscore a volatile threat landscape, exemplified by the discovery of a Python-based worm, MEL/Vacphage.A, embedded within assets on Epic Games’ Fab.com. This incident, where malicious code reached users through a platform typically viewed as secure, serves as a benchmark for the current testing cycle. Andreas Clementi, founder and CEO of AV-Comparatives, noted that security software must now account for threats arriving through daily-use platforms rather than relying solely on traditional link-based detection.

During the four-month assessment, researchers measured each suite’s ability to neutralize internet-based threats while minimizing false positives. Seven products earned the top ADVANCED+ certification: Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Microsoft, Norton, and TotalAV. These suites were tested alongside others, including ESET, F-Secure, and Trend Micro, in environments mirroring typical home-user behavior. The full report, which remains open to the public without registration, provides a granular look at how these products balance active protection with system stability.
