Purge at 60 Minutes: Journalists Allege Political Censorship

Veteran staff at 60 Minutes were fired Thursday in a sweeping shakeup led by editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. Ousted correspondents and producers characterize the mass departure not as a modernization effort, but as a calculated act of political censorship designed to align the network with the current administration's interests.

The dismissals included long-time executive producer Tanya Simon, correspondent Cecilia Vega, and executive editor Draggan Mihailovich. These exits follow the earlier departure of Sharyn Alfonsi, who had publicly clashed with leadership over the delay of a report concerning the CECOT prison in El Salvador. Vega, whose contract was slated to run until 2027, stated that her team faced consistent pressure to incorporate political bias into their segments, leading to a culture of fear where journalists avoided sensitive topics to escape internal backlash.

In a memo, Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski framed the changes as a necessary evolution for the 21st century, replacing established staff with outsiders like former New York Times columnist Nick Bilton. Critics, however, view the overhaul as a consolidation of influence. This transition occurs as Paramount, CBS’s parent company, nears a $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery—a deal that has drawn scrutiny from media watchdogs concerned about the formation of a media landscape increasingly susceptible to government pressure.
