Jim O'Neill, deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, announced the activation of a new oversight system for all Administration for Children and Families payments. The policy shift follows the suspension of funds for Minnesota earlier this week. O'Neill justified the freeze by pointing to a viral video produced by right-wing influencer Nick Shirley, which targeted Somali-owned daycare centers in Minnesota.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz condemned the decision, accusing the president of weaponizing the social safety net. Walz contrasted the administration's aggressive posture toward childcare providers with the recent commutation of the sentence of David Gentile, a private equity executive convicted of defrauding thousands of investors. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison described the funding cutoff as a "hasty, scorched-earth attack" and indicated that his office is evaluating legal options to block the move, which threatens to disrupt essential services for families reliant on federal support.
