The incident occurred on June 14 in a Senatobia Walmart parking lot. Sgt. Hunter Foster opened fire on a vehicle occupied by Kohen Wiley, his mother Vellesiya Wiley, and his aunt Latoya Ferrell, who was critically wounded in the shooting. Police had been responding to reports of a diaper theft, though no evidence of a crime has been publicly produced, and neither woman has been charged with an offense.
Attorney Ben Crump, representing the Wiley family, questioned the legitimacy of the state’s findings while demanding the release of body camera footage. The department remains under intense scrutiny following the recent firing of Police Chief Harold Vanderford over revelations of his use of racial slurs. Activists and legal scholars argue that the exoneration of Foster reflects a broader, systemic failure to hold law enforcement accountable for the deaths of Black citizens.
