Schumer Urges FCC to Block AI-Generated Political Robocalls

With the public comment period closing Monday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is pressuring the Republican-led Federal Communications Commission to deny a petition from the Club for Growth. The proposal seeks to bypass federal consent requirements for AI-generated political calls, raising alarms about potential election misinformation and voter deception.

The Club for Growth, a conservative nonprofit, petitioned the FCC in August for a waiver from existing regulations to permit AI-driven political outreach without prior express consent. The group contends that current rules, rooted in the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, infringe upon First Amendment rights by chilling political speech. However, consumer advocacy groups argue that removing these protections would invite a wave of invasive, deceptive content that disproportionately burdens small businesses and the general public.

Schumer described the potential approval as a dangerous expansion of election disinformation, warning that it would unleash a flood of deepfakes and dark-money-funded voices into the personal space of voters. Anna Gomez, the commission’s sole Democratic member, echoed these concerns, noting that unsolicited robocalls remain the agency’s primary source of consumer complaints. As the midterm elections approach, the debate highlights a sharp divide over whether regulatory safeguards should remain intact or be dismantled to accommodate new communication technologies.
