The project targets the Carmel Valley Clearwell Tank and the San Carlos Booster Pump Station, two facilities situated in high-risk zones. Planned site improvements include clearing encroaching vegetation, installing fire-resistant roofing, and reinforcing walls. The utility will also install an emergency generator to ensure the system maintains water pressure for firefighting and public supply during power outages.
Spencer Vartanian, director of operations for California American Water, noted that the funding allows for rapid hardening of these assets without passing the bulk of the $1.03 million price tag to ratepayers. By securing outside capital, the utility intends to accelerate protection for public health and emergency response capacity, a shift deemed necessary after recent extreme fire conditions highlighted the vulnerability of regional pumping and storage infrastructure.
