Seven Safety Hazards to Clear Before Trick-or-Treaters Arrive

As Halloween approaches, Grand Rapids homeowners are transforming yards into festive displays, yet these decorations often conceal significant risks. Kevin J. Vander Hyde, vice president of Vander Hyde Services, warns that neglected electrical cords and obstructed pathways can turn a night of neighborhood fun into a scene of preventable accidents.

The primary danger often stems from holiday lights stored away for a year. Inspect all cords for cracks or pest damage before plugging them in, and discard any with exposed wiring. Avoid daisy-chaining multiple extension cords, as overloading them creates a genuine fire hazard. Beyond electrical concerns, physical obstacles pose a constant threat; clear sidewalks of garden hoses and secure low-hanging wires that might snare a child’s costume in the dark.

Lighting and stability also require attention. Walk your property after sunset to identify dim spots along walkways, and ensure that inflatable or tall decorations are properly staked against windy conditions. Swap traditional candles inside jack-o'-lanterns for battery-operated LED versions to eliminate fire risks, and verify that all outdoor outlets feature functional, weatherproof covers. A brief, systematic walkthrough of the yard ensures the property remains welcoming rather than hazardous for visiting children.
