Small Business Owners Face Financial Risks from Lack of Exit Planning

Fifty-seven percent of U.S. small business owners rely on their companies to fund their retirement or next life stage, yet a new survey reveals that most have failed to formalize a valuation or exit strategy, leaving their primary financial asset vulnerable to poor timing and market uncertainty.

The research, conducted by Researchscape International for Exit Factor, highlights a disconnect between financial dependence and tactical preparation. While 64% of respondents have at least half of their personal net worth tied to their business, only 15% possess a formal written exit plan. Many entrepreneurs rely on informal estimates rather than professional valuations, creating a dangerous knowledge gap for those banking on a future sale.

Peter Giese, president of Exit Factor, notes that owners often treat exit planning as an afterthought rather than a strategic business function. The data shows that 33% of owners have taken no steps toward planning, and only 18% have secured a professional valuation. Emotional barriers and the daily demands of operations often take precedence, with 47% of owners claiming it is simply too early to consider an exit, even as their personal financial security remains tethered to a single, often illiquid asset.
