The municipal shelter, which processed over 8,200 dogs in the last year, faces significant challenges in a region identified as a heartworm hot spot. Dr. Heather Kennedy, chief veterinary officer at KC Pet Project, noted that the facility is currently managing roughly 300 heartworm-positive cases. Beyond standard intake protocols, the donation allows the shelter to supply a full year of medication to adopters who take home heartworm-positive dogs, removing a financial barrier to their recovery.
Beyond immediate shelter needs, the contribution extends to the organization’s community outreach program, which distributes supplies to pet owners experiencing financial hardship. Gio Abruzzini, CEO of Virbac North America, described the donation as an effort to ensure every animal receives a healthy start regardless of their housing status. The partnership reinforces the shelter's existing medical standards while addressing both heartworm and intestinal parasites in a high-volume municipal environment.
