The organizing drive marks a significant shift for the Bellwood-based workforce. Union leadership emphasized that the move is aimed at securing a collective bargaining agreement that finally reflects the professional responsibilities of transporting students daily. Jim Glimco, President of Local 777, noted that the workers provide an essential service to families across the state and deserve formal workplace protections.
For the employees, the vote represents a collective push for long-term stability. Al Mann, a bus worker and new union member, stated that the staff stood together to gain a stronger voice on the job. The union will now transition into contract negotiations, focusing on vacation time and comprehensive health benefits for the nearly 300 new members.
