This latest investment brings the foundation's total contribution to these regions to more than $45 million since 2020. Kathie Patterson, chair of the foundation, emphasized that the grants are shaped by direct community feedback rather than top-down mandates. The strategy focuses on creating interconnected support systems that address the specific barriers residents face in their daily lives.
In Detroit, 39 recipients are tackling workforce development through a tiered approach. Organizations like Atlantic Impact introduce youth to skilled trades, while NPower Michigan and Focus: HOPE provide technical credentials and wraparound support to ensure long-term career placement. These programs align with housing initiatives from Habitat for Humanity Detroit to help families secure stable living environments. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s 43 recipients emphasize a housing continuum, ranging from crisis intervention via Hearts for the Invisible Charlotte and Roof Above to long-term homeownership support through Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region. By funding these diverse entities, the foundation attempts to bridge the gap between immediate survival and sustainable financial independence.
