Gratitude Reaches Record Highs Despite Growing American Stress

Americans are reporting their highest levels of gratitude since 2020, even as indicators of stress, worry, and irritability continue to climb. New longitudinal data from the fourth wave of the Grateful Study suggests that emotional resilience is decoupling from external circumstances, marking a shift in how individuals navigate uncertainty.

The research, conducted by Eastern Washington University and Gracianna Winery, reveals that while feelings of calmness and optimism have declined since 2024, gratitude scores rose by nearly 10% in 2026. Philip Watkins, the study’s principal investigator, noted that the trend defies traditional psychological expectations, where rising stress typically suppresses positive emotions. Instead, gratitude has emerged as a distinct, growing force in American emotional life.

Data indicates that this rise is less about improved life conditions and more about a shift in personal priorities. The most significant predictors of gratitude included a conscious appreciation for daily life and a clearer focus on what truly matters. Rather than a byproduct of ease, gratitude is proving to be a deliberate tool for well-being. Trini Amador IV, co-founder of Gracianna Winery, emphasized that people are increasingly capable of identifying meaningful aspects of their lives even while navigating significant global and personal challenges. As the study continues, researchers aim to determine whether this trajectory represents a permanent shift in how Americans cultivate resilience.
