Ventura County Launches Unified Contactless Transit Payments

Seven transit operators across Ventura County have integrated their fare systems, allowing riders to pay for travel using contactless credit or debit cards. The project, a collaboration between Enghouse Transportation and the California Integrated Travel Project, enables automatic fare calculations and seamless transfers across agency boundaries.

The initiative builds on an initial deployment with the Ventura County Transportation Commission, creating a regional network that functions as a single transit system. Passengers benefit from fare capping, which ensures costs remain consistent regardless of how many participating services they utilize during a trip. The system also automates reduced fare eligibility, simplifying access for qualified riders.

Gillian Gillett, California’s Integrated Mobility Program Manager, described the launch as a significant milestone for state-wide public transit. Enghouse provides the underlying fare collection technology and real-time processing, while Cal-ITP supplies the implementation framework. Daniel Sjöström, managing director at Enghouse, noted that the project serves as a foundation for future modernization efforts, aiming to reduce barriers to public transportation and improve overall passenger accessibility.
