Born from a partnership between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health, the institution aims to address a widening physician shortage in the region. Federal data highlights the urgency of this mission: 60 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes are currently designated as Health Professional Shortage Areas, while the U.S. faces a projected deficit of 141,000 doctors by 2038. By leveraging Xavier’s century-long record in STEM education and Ochsner’s clinical infrastructure, the college intends to bridge the gap between rigorous academic preparation and community-focused healthcare.
Beyond its educational mandate, the school is set to become a significant regional economic driver. Located in the New Orleans BioDistrict, the college is projected to generate $152.5 million in local economic impact by 2040 and support over 1,185 jobs across the state. Applications for the first cohort are scheduled to open through the American Medical College Application Service in the coming weeks, formalizing a vision that leaders hope will diversify the physician workforce and improve health outcomes for historically underserved populations.
