The selection process balances expert opinion with analytical rigor, as managers and coaches contribute 75 percent of the vote, while the SABR Defensive Index accounts for the remaining portion. This year’s list of 18 positional categories features 22 previous recipients, underscoring the consistent high-level performance required to remain in contention for the honor. Mike Thompson, chief marketing officer at Rawlings, emphasized that defensive excellence often dictates the outcome of a season, noting that these players have consistently shifted momentum through their work in the field.
Beyond the traditional positions, Rawlings continues to refine its utility player selection, employing a specialized formula developed alongside the Society for American Baseball Research. Following the November 1 broadcast, the focus will shift to the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award. Fans will have the opportunity to participate in the selection of the Platinum winners through an online vote beginning that evening, with the final results to be announced in New York City on November 6.
