The new system utilizes a two-transmitter, one-receiver configuration capable of maintaining a stable connection at line-of-sight distances up to 500 meters. By integrating with Sony’s Multi-Interface Shoe, the ECM-W5 transmits audio directly to compatible cameras as a single digital file, effectively bypassing the need for time-consuming post-production synchronization. The inclusion of 64 GB of onboard storage on each transmitter acts as a fail-safe, offering up to 90 hours of backup recording at 32-bit float/48 kHz.
Designed for dynamic shooting environments, the hardware supports four-channel recording when combined with additional transmitters, catering to complex interviews or multi-camera setups. Users can monitor audio wirelessly through compatible Sony headphones, a feature aimed at reducing cable clutter on set. Beyond camera integration, the system includes a USB Type-C adapter for direct recording to smartphones and PCs. According to Yang Cheng, Senior Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics, the focus remains on reducing technical management during shoots so creators can prioritize narrative consistency in high-pressure scenarios.
