Improved Pharma Showcases Microgravity and Nanoparticle Research at AAPS

West Lafayette-based Improved Pharma is set to anchor a prominent exhibition space at the AAPS 2026 PharmSci 360 conference, sharing booth #1518 with Varda Space Industries. The firm’s delegation will focus on advanced solid-state chemistry, formulation design, and the emerging potential of crystallization research conducted in microgravity environments.

Stephen Byrn, Pam Smith, Susan Bogdanowich-Knipp, and Ruba Alajlouni will represent the company, engaging with attendees on research and development needs. The team plans to highlight two specific technical studies during the event. Ruba Alajlouni, representing both Improved Pharma and Purdue University, will present findings on identifying unknown impurities within etoposide phosphate solid lipid nanoparticle formulations. Her work details the diagnostic process used to pinpoint the contaminant and the subsequent adjustments to manufacturing protocols required to prevent its formation.

In a collaborative effort with BASF, the firm will also present research regarding spray-dried danazol-copovidone amorphous solid dispersions. Led by Dr. Kun Chen of BASF, this study explores how secondary vacuum drying and the limit of congruency serve as critical boundaries for drug loading, stability, and dissolution performance. These presentations underscore the company’s ongoing focus on high-level analytical testing and formulation optimization, a mission sustained since its founding in 2006 by Stephen and Sarah Byrn.
