SmartSens Targets Level 4 Autonomy with New Automotive Sensor Suite

At AutoSens Europe 2026 in Barcelona, SmartSens unveiled a specialized portfolio of CMOS image sensors designed to bolster vehicle perception for high-level automated driving. By integrating advanced computing architectures directly into its imaging hardware, the company aims to sharpen camera performance for forward-facing, surround-view, and cabin-monitoring systems.

The company, currently ranked as the third-largest player in global CIS market shipments, demonstrated its latest hardware at La Farga de L'Hospitalet. A central highlight was the deployment of the 8.3MP SC860AT sensor for forward-facing cameras, paired with the M2 SoC from subsidiary Flyingchip. This combination enables vehicles to maintain high-fidelity monitoring in fluctuating light, a critical requirement for safety-critical tasks like object detection and lane keeping.

Beyond external road sensing, SmartSens showcased an in-cabin occupant monitoring system using the 5MP SC533AT sensor. This unit supports passenger and child detection, as well as object monitoring, utilizing high shutter efficiency to ensure clarity. For parking and low-speed maneuvers, the firm presented the 3MP SC360AT, which manages high-contrast environments like direct headlight glare or deep shadows to provide a consistent 360-degree view.

Toby Zou, co-general manager of the firm's Automotive Business Group, emphasized that the industry’s shift toward Level 3 and Level 4 automation demands more than just raw pixel count. During his keynote, he detailed how deep integration between pixel architecture and system-level computing is essential for reliable perception in complex traffic scenarios. By offering these unified platforms to Tier 1 suppliers and automakers, SmartSens is positioning its hardware as a core component for production-scale intelligent driving deployments.
