US Workers Face Open Enrollment With Growing Financial Anxiety

Nearly 80 percent of U.S. employees spend an hour or less selecting their health benefits, despite widespread anxiety over medical costs and potential income loss. A new survey from BenefitHub reveals a significant comprehension gap, as workers struggle to navigate complex coverage choices during a period of heightened financial instability.

The 2026 Open Enrollment Report highlights a disconnect between corporate investment and employee security. While 77 percent of workers fear out-of-pocket medical expenses and 73 percent worry about their ability to cover bills during an extended illness, only 28 percent feel their current benefits package provides adequate protection. Compounding the issue, 45 percent of staff make these high-stakes decisions without seeking any outside guidance.

BenefitHub CEO Jeff Litvack notes that the problem is not a lack of concern, but a lack of clarity. With over half of employees reporting an anxious relationship with their finances, the pressure to choose correctly often results in rushed, uninformed selections. The data suggests that for HR leaders, the enrollment window has transitioned from a standard administrative task into a crucial moment for workforce engagement. Experts argue that moving toward year-round education and simplified plan comparisons is the only way for companies to ensure their benefits investments actually translate into tangible financial security for staff.
